As Mayor of Riverton City, I understand it is not the responsibility of government to take care of every family in the City limits during the event of an emergency, but that it is the responsibility of each family to prepare and take care of their family first, then assist their neighbor. However as Mayor, I feel a heavy burden and responsibility to the citizens of Riverton and know that if we work together, we will be better prepared as a community, especially in the case of an emergency.
As a City we are updating our Emergency Preparedness Plan. It is our goal to create a solid community plan that will work for both our City and our Residents. This packet is one of the many ongoing programs we are using to identify the needs of our community in case of a severe City emergency (these types of emergencies might include earthquake, flood, hazardous material exposure). Please take the time to visit with the members of your family concerning this packet. This packet includes paper flyers to be taped to an exterior, visible site of your home in the case of an emergency so your Block Captain can quickly and efficiently meet the needs of your family as well as your neighbors. If you have questions concerning this program, please contact your Block Captain.
In the case of an emergency the City will use the following outline for communication:
Information from the Mayor will be given to the City Council. Your district City Council member will give the information to the Area Leader (which would be the LDS geographical stake boundary). Area Leader will then pass the information to the Team Leader (which would be the LDS geographical ward boundary), which would then give the information to the Block Captain. The Block Captain will then take the information to his or her neighbors. If there is information that needs to be passed back up to the Mayor, the information would be passed in the reverse order.
As the Mayor of Riverton I would personally encourage you to get your family ready in case of an emergency, in the following areas:
·Family Preparedness:
oInclude a family meeting place for a home emergency (Front yard, neighbor, etc)
oFamily meeting place in case of a neighborhood emergency (Church, School, etc)
oCollect an updated 72-Hour emergency supply kit for each member of your family
oKnow how to go powerless
·Community Preparedness:
oBecome a volunteer– Register for a CERT class or become a Block Captain
oKnow Your Neighborhood- Contact your Block Captain to report family information that might be helpful in the case of an emergency.
oLearn First Aid.
·School Preparedness:
oInform yourself as to the individual school preparedness plan and discuss it with your family.
oTest emergency plans with your family as if the emergency occurs while your child is in school.
oObtain emergency supplies that would aid your child at school in case of a daytime emergency.
